What is environmental coastal engineering?
It is the use of scientific and engineering principles to protect the natural environment from the effects of human activity. Our own application of it is a Coastal Accretion Design: stabilizer tubes placed along the nearshore that use the energy already in the waves to encourage sand and sediment to build up, imitating the geology that forms a beach naturally.
What are the common coastal problems you see?
Much of the damage begins inland. Inlets and engineered channels change how rivers run, sediment is pushed out to sea faster than the coast can replace it, and the shoreline begins to retreat. The beach is losing its supply, not just its sand.
What equipment and technology do you use?
Computer modelling and algorithms, used to simulate wave behaviour, sediment transport and shoreline change, and to decide where a structure should sit. Our design method itself is held as a trade secret.
What does it cost to recover a coastline?
It depends on the extent of the erosion, the level of restoration wanted and the size of the site. Costs typically cover engineering and design, labour and equipment, materials, permits, environmental assessment and continued monitoring. A survey and feasibility study come first; no figure can be given honestly before then, so ours is [TBD].
What is the film project?
A record of coastal recovery as it happens — assessment, planning, installation and the years afterwards — made so that the process is visible to people who will never stand on the site. It is titled SavingBú.
Does buying from the shop fund the work?
[TBD]. Ordering is not connected yet, and we will not describe where money goes until it genuinely does.
