The canvas installations do two jobs at once. They hold the structure that steadies a shoreline, and they carry an image where people will actually stand and look at it.
A public utility that is also a canvas
Film canvases are placed along eroded shoreline as part of the nourishment work: they steady the beachfront while giving artists a surface at the waterline. Artists work alongside the engineers and the people who live on the coast in question, and the finished installation explains the erosion problem better than a sign ever would.
